Full Time (2 Positions)
Location: West End Edmonton
Hours:  Shift work, including weekends and statutory holidays.
Closing Date: Until a suitable candidate is found.
Wage: Competitive wage based on experience

 

Position Summary:

IAAW is seeking a reliable, personable and experienced Cook to join our housing team.

The Cook will be responsible for planning, preparing and serving nutritious meals for residents of our 12-bed shelter, including breakfast, lunch and dinner. The successful candidate will be comfortable working with vulnerable populations and creating a welcoming, respectful and culturally safe environment.

 

 Reporting to the Facility Supervisor, key responsibilities include:

  • Plan, prepare and serve breakfast, lunch and dinner each day;
  • Prepare nutritious and appealing meals while considering dietary restrictions and food preferences;
  • Maintain a clean, organized and sanitary kitchen;
  • Follow food safety, sanitation and safe food handling practices;
  • Safely operate kitchen appliances and commercial kitchen equipment;
  • Monitor food supplies and assist with grocery shopping, ordering and inventory;
  • Work within an established food budget and minimize food waste;
  • Prepare food in advance as needed for meals;
  • Maintain appropriate food storage and kitchen organization;
  • Communicate respectfully and professionally with shelter residents;
  • Create a welcoming and positive environment around meal times;
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries when working with residents;
  • Work collaboratively with shelter staff to support the overall operation of the shelter;
  • Follow all organizational policies, procedures and health and safety requirements;
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Previous cooking experience required;
  • Commercial kitchen experience is an asset;
  • Experience using commercial kitchen equipment is an asset;
  • Food Safe certification, or willingness to obtain;
  • Experience working with vulnerable populations is an asset;
  • Reliable transportation is required;
  • Completion and maintenance of clear Criminal Records Check including Vulnerable Sector;
  • Canadian citizen or permanent resident (eligible to work in Canada);

Language: Fluency in English is essential. Bilingualism in an Indigenous language is a strong asset.

Travel: Reliable form of transportation, valid drivers license is an asset.
