Working Conditions

Program Overview
The Esquao Pathways to Employment Opportunities project is an IAAW initiative aimed at strengthening employment and training pathways for Indigenous women by building connections between communities, employers, training institutions, and youth. The project focuses on partnership development, awareness, and event-based outreach to promote career, education, and employment opportunities.
Position Summary
The Employment Opportunities Coordinator plays a key role in organizing and promoting employment and training initiatives through events, community engagement, and partnerships. This position leads IAAW’s participation in regional and provincial career fairs, coordinates IAAW-hosted events such as the Esquao Career Fair, Youth Conference, and College Fair, and connects with communities to build awareness of IAAW’s employment programs.
The coordinator is outgoing, well-organized, and passionate about supporting Indigenous women and youth to access meaningful employment and education opportunities through collaboration and partnership.
Key Responsibilities
Event Coordination
- Plan, organize, and deliver IAAW-hosted employment and training events, including the Esquao Career Fair, Youth Conference, and College Fair.
- Coordinate logistics such as venue booking, scheduling, promotion, registration, catering, and set-up/tear-down.
- Liaise with exhibitors, employers, training institutions, and guest speakers to ensure successful participation.
- Develop marketing materials and outreach campaigns in collaboration with IAAW’s communications team.
- Attend and represent IAAW at external career fairs, community events, and conferences across Alberta.
Community & Partner Engagement
- Build and maintain relationships with Indigenous communities, employment organizations, and training institutions.
- Present IAAW’s employment programming to community leaders, schools, and organizations to explore collaboration opportunities.
- Identify potential partnerships or programs that align with IAAW’s employment goals and participant supports.
- Support IAAW’s role in regional employment networks and community engagement initiatives.
Program Promotion & Outreach
- Promote awareness of IAAW’s employment supports, including wage subsidies, pre-employment training, and partnerships.
- Develop and distribute outreach materials, newsletters, and event invitations.
- Support data collection, feedback, and follow-up from events and community visits.
Reporting & Administration
- Track engagement, participation, and outcomes related to outreach and events.
- Prepare progress and financial reports as required by IAAW and the funder.
- Maintain organized records of event planning, contacts, and community outreach activities.
Qualifications
- Diploma or Degree in Project Management, Education, Indigenous Studies, or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
- Minimum 2-3 years’ experience coordinating employment, training, or community programs
- Strong understanding of Indigenous cultures, community protocols, and trauma-informed practices.
- Experience collaborating with post-secondary institutions and employers
- Excellent organizational, communication, and relationship-building skills
- Knowledge of and commitment to the principles and values that guide the work of Esquao, the Institute for the Advancement of Aboriginal Women.
- Strong understanding of issues related to improving the lives of Indigenous women and their families.
- Knowledge of community-based programming, and resilience-building practices.
- Excellent project management, organizational, and analytical skills.
- Strong communication, facilitation, and community engagement abilities.
- Proficiency in data collection tools and monitoring & evaluation methods.
- Superior communication skills, including strong interpersonal, written, and verbal abilities when working with diverse groups, communities, and individuals.
- Skilled facilitator with demonstrated liaison and networking expertise.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a collaborative team environment; strong organizational skills.
- Thorough understanding of how to manage confidential and sensitive information appropriately.
- Proven ability to work effectively in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment.
- Flexibility and adaptability in response to shifting tasks and priorities.
- Comprehensive knowledge and experience with computer software, including the Microsoft Office Suite and online communication tools.
