Program Coordinator – Violence Prevention and Advocacy

Position Summary:

The Program Coordinator will support the skill and knowledge development of Indigenous women, young women, and gender-diverse individuals. Working out of the Edmonton office, the coordinator will collaborate closely with multiple partner agencies to assist Indigenous women to identify and eliminate dangerous situations and learn how to build healthy relationships. This program will use many existing tools and information and also work toward increasing trauma-informed and cultural connections through outreach and collaboration.

Through Advocacy, the Coordinator leads initiatives that promote the rights, safety, wellbeing, and empowerment of Indigenous women and girls. This role focuses on, community engagement, policy influence, and support for Indigenous women impacted by social, economic, and systemic barriers. The coordinator collaborates closely with communities, Elders, government partners, and service providers to advance equitable and culturally grounded outcomes.

 

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education in Indigenous Studies, Social Services, or related field (equivalent lived experience and community knowledge considered).
  • 2–5 years of experience in violence prevention, advocacy, community engagement, women’s services, or Indigenous-led programming.
  • Experience working with First Nations, Métis, and/or Inuit communities in Alberta with a clear understanding of Indigenous culture.
  • Successful completion and ongoing maintenance of a clear Criminal Records Check.
  • Valid Driver’s License and reliable transportation
  • Language: Fluency in English is essential. Bilingualism in an Indigenous language is a strong asset.
  • Citizenship: Canadian citizen or permanent resident (eligible to work in Canada)

 

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of and commitment to the principles and values that guide the work of Esquao, the Institute for the Advancement of Aboriginal Women.
  • Strong understanding of issues affecting the lives of Indigenous women and their families, including intergenerational trauma, colonial systems, and socio-economic inequities.
  • Knowledge of Alberta’s social service, justice, and health systems.
  • Excellent communication, facilitation, public speaking, and relationship-building skills.
  • Strong writing skills for advocacy documents, proposals, and policy submissions.
  • Ability to work in a trauma-informed, culturally safe, anti-racist, and strengths-based manner.
  • Experience collaborating with Elders and integrating Indigenous knowledge into programming.
  • Excellent project management, organizational, and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in data collection tools and monitoring & evaluation methods.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a collaborative team environment; strong organizational skills.
  • Thorough understanding of how to manage confidential and sensitive information appropriately.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment.
  • Flexibility and adaptability in response to shifting tasks and priorities.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience with computer software, including the Microsoft Office Suite and online communication tools.

 

Responsibilities Include, but not limited to:

Violence Prevention

  • Deliver violence prevention workshops and presentations (online and in person) using the Violence Prevention video/lesson series.
  • Identify participant needs and recruit/resource people to attend sessions.
  • Keep thorough notes and files; prepare weekly and monthly reports.
  • Ensure participant information is collected and stored safely.
  • Meet with women requesting supports and use case management tools noted in Esquao, IAAW’s Core Competencies.
  • Communicate best practices and areas for improvement
  • Join with other staff members to ensure important organizational milestones are met, including events and gatherings.
  • Contribute to the development of program materials, as needed.

 

Advocacy

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of advocacy purposes and protocols, and consistently apply them in all interactions.
  • Conduct one-on-one interviews to identify individual barriers and facilitate access to appropriate supports and services.
  • Community Outreach & Engagement- Build and maintain strong relationships with community organizations, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and Band/Settlement Councils.
  • Build partnerships with Indigenous organizations, women’s shelters, health services, legal clinics, and government departments.
  • Promote interagency collaboration to improve service pathways for Indigenous women.
  • Support public education on Indigenous rights, reconciliation principles, and gender equity.
  • Provide information, referrals, and advocacy support to Indigenous women navigating social services, legal systems, housing, healthcare, or victim services.
  • Assist individuals with safety planning and understanding their rights and available resources.
  • Maintain confidentiality and trauma-informed, culturally safe practices.
  • Conduct research on issues affecting Indigenous women in Alberta, including systemic barriers and service gaps.
  • Track and evaluate advocacy activities and outcomes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
