The Financial Education Program is part of Esquao’s poverty-reduction strategy which includes increasing employment and career development opportunities. As part of Esquao’s commitment to financial literacy, the program addresses poverty within a cultural context by building skills and confidence in women and girls with the aim of increasing their financial literacy.
Financial literacy is having the knowledge, skills and confidence to make appropriate financial decisions. It relates to not just saving money, but to the process of financial decision-making over the short and long term. This includes understanding the consequences of financial decisions, having the knowledge and skills to interpret and assess financial documents and products, and having the confidence to make proactive decisions in managing one’s own money.
I am very thankful to Esquao for funding me for the last six months of my degree, it came at a time that my band quit funding me and I was stressed on how I was going to feed and house my children. I thought about quitting until I could get funding but persevered anyways and I am thankful I did because I was able to receive help, take care of my children, and complete school. Esquao came at a perfect time and it allowed me to fulfill my dream of obtaining my degree, so thank you.
