Violence Prevention
The Mêskanaw Program (the Path in Cree) is a series of eight weekly sessions designed to raise awareness about the various forms of violence in Indigenous communities. Violence manifests in many ways and impacts families, communities, stakeholders, and governments.
Violence prevention is crucial, especially given the epidemic of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit (MMIWG2S+) who face a disproportionately high rate of violence. By educating and empowering participants, the Mêskanaw Program aims to lower violence rates and promote safer environments within Indigenous communities.
The program uses a combination of interactive videos, group discussions, cultural teachings, and guest speakers to engage participants and foster a supportive, culturally safe learning environment.
The program is designed for Indigenous women (18+). Participants must be referred by an agency to the program. Please note that this program is not intended for individuals currently in crisis situations. If you are experiencing a crisis or violent situation, please contact emergency services or call 211 for immediate assistance.
The topics that are covered in this program are:
- Public safety for Indigenous women
- Planning to leave
- Unmotivated partners
- Circle of supports
- New relationship safety
- Dealing with family conflict
- Family supports
- Loving yourself
Program Objectives:
- Education and Awareness: To educate participants about the different and unique forms of violence that Indigenous people experience, the signs, and its impact on individuals and communities.
- Prevention Strategies: To teach practical strategies and skills for preventing violence, such as conflict resolution, communication skills, and safety planning.
- Support and Resources: To provide access to resources and support systems for participants.
